HEC to Build Two Universities in Islamabad’s Sector I-17
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has allocated land to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for the construction of two universities in Sector I-17.
Previously, in 2007, CDA had allotted 250 acres to HEC in the Kuri area. However, due to land possession issues, the transfer was never completed. Recently, CDA, in collaboration with the Defense Housing Authority (DHA), launched the Margalla Enclave Housing Project in I-17. As part of this initiative, all government educational institutions previously allotted land in Kuri will now receive alternative plots in Sector I-17.
A CDA official confirmed that the designated plots for universities and educational institutions have been relocated to the Institutional Sector (I-17) following approval from the CDA Board and the federal government.
Sources within HEC revealed that in 2007, HEC had planned to establish the University of Engineering, Sciences, and Technology on 250 acres, with 35 acres reserved for the National University of Law. However, due to local occupation, the land remained inaccessible. HEC is now seeking either the original land or an alternative allocation. A meeting with CDA is expected soon to finalize the matter.
CDA officials assured that HEC will be provided land in I-17, similar to allocations made for other government institutions. Additionally, sources within HEC pointed out that apart from university land, the commission holds several valuable plots in Islamabad’s commercial areas, including G-11 and I-8, which remain unused. Officials emphasized the need for HEC to secure its land and commence construction promptly.
CDA had initially acquired 3,200 acres in Kuri, Mojohan, and Rehala revenue estates in Zone IV during the 1970s but faced resistance from local landowners. Recently, in collaboration with DHA, CDA successfully acquired 10,000 Kanal for the Margalla Enclave joint venture. Under this agreement, CDA will receive a 55% share in plots, while DHA will retain 45% and oversee project execution.
The relocation of universities to Sector I-17 marks a significant step in Islamabad’s educational development, ensuring better infrastructure for higher learning institutions.
